How to Choose the Right Bike Size? Discover tips for selecting the bike size that suits you, including using the bike size calculator.
Bike Size: The Basic Method
A widely used method involves measuring the length of your legs and multiplying this length by 0.66 to obtain the ideal bike frame size.
Bike frame size calculation: Leg inseam length (in cm) x 0.66 = frame size
This method is suitable for choosing a road bike or a gravel bike. For choosing a mountain bike (MTB), a coefficient of 0.59 is typically used.
Online Bike Size Calculator
At Origine-cycles.com, after designing your bike on the configurator, you can use an online bike size calculator. This tool is based on thousands of cyclist data to determine the ideal heights and lengths according to your morphology.
The bike size calculator calculates your:
- Frame size
- Stem length
- Handlebar width
- Head tube height
- Crank length
In the calculator, enter your height, age, weight, the position you want to have (sporty or comfortable), as well as your inseam height and shoulder width to get this virtual postural study.
Calculate your inseam height
This measurement is taken without shoes or loose clothing (ideally do it in underwear or cycling shorts).
Stand against a wall, straight, with shoulders, buttocks, calves, and heels touching the wall. Raise a ruler as high as possible between your legs, holding it horizontally, and measure its height from the ground.”
Calculate your shoulder width
This measurement allows you to adjust, if necessary, the standard width of the handlebar. Make small circles with your arms to locate the pivot point of each of your joints, on the top of your shoulders. Measure the distance between these 2 points.
Custom dimensions on your bike
On the Origine website, using the size calculator or by choosing your dimensions, you can obtain customized measurements. The size simulator calculates the size of your ideal frame, as well as the length of the stem, the width of the handlebars, the height of the cockpit, and the lengths of the cranks. This way, you get tailor-made dimensions, adapted to your morphology and your practice.
Example of customized dimensions:
This is possible because Origine bikes are assembled one by one, by hand, in our factory located in the North of France. This custom assembly allows us to deliver bikes with personalized dimensions for each cyclist, according to their morphology.
Custom Bike Sizes
For each model, Origine offers over 3000 different size combinations. This allows for a custom fit on your gravel, road, or mountain bike. Whether you have a short torso and long legs or vice versa, there will be a frame, stem length, headtube height, and crank length that matches your morphology. It’s this range of sizes that also allows Origine to offer its entire range to both women and men. It’s your bike configuration that adapts to you, not the other way around.
Choosing your sizes and defining your own measurements.
At Origine, you can also take your existing measurements to replicate or adjust them on your new bike. For this purpose, each Origine bike is available in six different sizes. With the frame geometry chart, you can determine which size suits you best.
Example of the Fraxion geometry chart:
Once you’ve chosen your frame size, you can refine your bike’s dimensions by selecting the stem length, handlebar width, cockpit height, and crank length. This way, you’ll get customized measurements to match your morphology.
